Propulsion by reciprocal motion into granular media

چکیده
In a viscous fluid, reciprocal motion does not lead to net propulsion by virtue of the Scallop theorem. granular medium, we observe that same generates large drift moving object. This study investigates specific mechanisms underlying this propulsion.

Colloquium: Biophysical principles of undulatory self-propulsion in granular media
Biological locomotion, movement within environments through self-deformation, encompasses a range of time and length scales in an organism. These include the electrophysiology of the nervous system, the dynamics of muscle activation, the mechanics of the skeletal system, and the interaction mechanics of such structures within natural environments like water, air, sand, and mud. Unlike the many ...
متن کاملA reciprocal theorem for Marangoni propulsion
We study the Marangoni propulsion of a spheroidal particle located at a liquid–gas interface. The particle asymmetrically releases an insoluble surface-active agent and so creates and maintains a surface tension gradient leading to the self-propulsion. Assuming that the surface tension has a linear dependence on the concentration of the released agent, we derive closed-form expressions for the ...
متن کاملMultilaminate Elastoplastic Model for Granular Media
A multilaminate based model capable of predicting the behavior of granular material on the basis of sliding mechanisms and elastic behavior of particles is presented. The capability of the model to predict the behavior of sand under arbitrary stress paths is examined. The influences of rotation of the direction of principal stress axes and induced anisotropy are included in a rational way witho...
متن کاملPenetration of spherical projectiles into wet granular media.
We measure experimentally the penetration depth d of spherical particles into a water-saturated granular medium made of much smaller sand-sized grains. We vary the density, size R, and velocity U of the impacting spheres, and the size δ of the grains in the granular medium. We consider velocities between 7 and 107 m/s, a range not previously addressed, but relevant for impacts produced by volca...
